Transitioning into Maternity Clothes June 02, 2015 12:00

Where Do I Start?

When it comes to shopping for your maternity wardrobe there are several things to keep in mind. First of all, there isn’t a specific time to transition. Every woman’s body changes at different rates, in different ways and even in different places. We’re unique. You get to decide when you’re ready.

Second, clothing is an investment at any stage of life. The most common assumption women make is thinking that they don’t need to buy clothes they’re only going to wear for a few months. However, maternity apparel has evolved. Instead of the tents and moo-moos that used to hide that bump in days of old, we get fitted tops and wrap dresses, ruching and flattering drapes.

A majority of maternity lines are producing what they call “Transitional Maternity Wear”, which means they’re pieces that can be worn before, during and after baby. Get them as early as four weeks and wear them for years, really.

We suggest starting with a good pair of jeans. Whether it’s traditional denim or white, jeans are a staple in any wardrobe, something you know you’ll get plenty of wear out of. Available in a variety of styles, our favorite is the kind with under-belly panels. Located where you usually find front pockets, not only does the super-stretchy material provide comfort for your growing bump, you also have the option to wear them after baby.

From here you can choose from a variety of top options. There are styles to fit every shape and personality from fitted to flowy, prints or solids. Choose what makes you feel most comfortable. We always encourage our customers to try on in order to find their most flattering fits.

And finally, the most functional piece of a maternity wardrobe, dresses. Between showers, weddings and church, there’s bound to be an unexpected event you’ll have to dress for. The good news is, not only are there tons of dress options, they’re super comfortable! Today’s maternity dresses go beyond the simple empire waist. One of our favorites is a wrap style, great for all stages of pregnancy.
